DSES - Understanding Sleep Problems and Exploring Solutions

The Down Syndrome Education Series (DSES) is a monthly educational seminar for families of children with Down syndrome, designed to connect parents with information that will positively impact the education and well-being of their child.

Topic - Understanding Sleep Issues and Exploring Solutions
This talk is designed for parents and providers who want to learn more about sleep, why children with special needs may have difficulty sleeping, and what they can do to help everyone in the family sleep better. The session will be informative and practical and will provide families with ideas that they can use at home.
Learning Objectives:
• Review information about the basics of sleep
• Discuss reasons why children with special needs have difficulty with sleep
• Identify treatment strategies that will help children (and their families!) sleep better
Bio - Dr. Terry Katz is a licensed psychologist and Senior Instructor with Distinction in Developmental Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She has specialized in the assessment and treatment of children with neurodevelopmental disorders for over 25 years. She co-founded and co-leads a sleep behavior clinic for children with special needs at Children’s Hospital Colorado and is the co-author of a parenting book on sleep and autism. Dr. Katz provides education and consultation on sleep for children and adults throughout the country. She has developed webinars, toolkits, and education manuals to help improve sleep in individuals with special needs. Dr. Katz also conducts research on sleep and autism and co-led the Autism Speaks/Autism Treatment Network sleep committee from 2012 to 2014.
