The Down Syndrome Education Series (DSES) is a monthly educational seminar for families of children with Down syndrome, designed to connect parents with information that will positively impact the education and well-being of their child.
The Down Syndrome Education Series is thrilled to announce Jennifer Bekins, MS, CCC-SLP, as our first speaker for the 2014-2015 series.
Jennifer Bekins is the lead speech-language pathologist with the nationally recognized Jane and Richard Thomas Center for Down Syndrome at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Jennifer has practiced since 2001 upon graduating from Loyola University Maryland. Her focus in children with Down syndrome includes feeding disorders, parent-child interaction, and communication skills for life success. Jennifer blogs about her experiences as an SLP and sibling to a sister and two brothers with Down syndrome at Talk-DS.org.
Session Description: "Foundations for Communication in Children with Down Syndrome"
This presentation will explore the way children and teens learn to talk and engage with family, friends, and people within the community. This dynamic session will explore how and why children DS communicate and the common behaviors seen when frustration occurs. Participants will learn simple ways increase communication success in children with DS from infancy through teen years. Handouts with links to speech-language resources will be provided.
Childcare is not provided. With the exception of infants, we request that you refrain from bringing children to this event.
