X-WR-CALDESC:The Down Syndrome Education Series (DSES) is a monthly educati
onal seminar for families of children with Down syndrome\, designed to con
nect parents with information that will positively impact the education an
 d well-being of their child.\n\nSpeaker - Amy Allison\, Chief Operating Of
ficer\, Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City \n\nWorkshop Title: Stu
dent Empowerment through Effective Para educator Support\n\n*This presenta
tion is open to anyone who would like to attend including parents\, caregi
vers\, paraeducators\, special education teachers\, and classroom teachers
 .\n\nWorkshop Description:\n\n \n\nMany students with Down syndrome have P
ara educator (para) support included in their IEP’s. With ever increasing
classroom demands on teachers\, it’s not uncommon for the Para to be respo
nsible for direct instruction\, modifying curriculum\, doing data collecti
on on IEP goals\, intervening with behavioral interventions\, supporting t
ransitions\, and directing students from class to class. Therefore\, it’s
important that para support be administered in a manner that fosters indep
endence and promotes self-regulation to ensure student success in adulthoo
d.\n\n \n\nThis presentation will focus on the critical attributes of an e
ffective para. Strategies will be shared that will ensure needed supports
while balancing out student empowerment\, skill development\, and promote
independence in school and beyond. While many educators and family members
may see the para as a caretaker ensuring the child is safe and engaged\,
the level of support being provided by the para may actually be fostering
a level of learned helplessness. Together\, session participants will expl
ore ways to foster student empowerment\, self-regulation and learning thro
ugh effective para intervention.\n\nBio - Amy Allison currently serves as
the Chief Operating Officer of the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas C
ity (DSG). DSG\, founded in 1984 by a group of dedicated parents of childr
en with Down syndrome\, provides programs and services to improve the qual
ity of life for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. DSG ser
ves over 800 families caring for a loved one with Down syndrome in the gre
ater Kansas City area on both sides of the state line.\n\nIn addition to h
er work with DSG\, Amy Allison served as a member of the Board of Director
s for Down Syndrome Affiliates In Action (DSAIA). In 2009\, Amy’s leadersh
ip and expertise helped DSAIA organize a conference in Washington DC where
more than 300 Down syndrome advocates from 35 states gathered at the U.S.
capitol to lobby Capitol Hill. The purpose of this effort was to seek fed
eral funds to help spread accurate information about prenatally diagnosed
disabilities and to raise additional support for Down syndrome related cau
ses.\n\nAmy received a double bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociolog
y from Brigham Young University.\n\n*Registration will close Monday\, Sept
