X-WR-CALDESC:The Down Syndrome Education Series (DSES) is a monthly educati
onal seminar for families of children with Down syndrome\, designed to con
nect parents with information that will positively impact the education an
 d well-being of their child.\n\nSpeakers - Dr. Kate Waugh\, Immunologist\,
and Keith Smith\, Senior Research Assistant\n\nTopic - The Human Trisome
Project \nDown syndrome is caused when an individual is born with a third
copy of chromosome 21\, an event called trisomy 21. Trisomy 21 occurs in 1
every ~700 live births\, making it the most common chromosomal abnormalit
y in the human population. Trisomy 21 impacts the development of nearly ev
ery major organ system in the body\, which causes individuals with Down sy
ndrome to experience a different array of health problems than the typical
population. Interestingly\, people with Down syndrome are protected from
developing some medical conditions\, such as most solid tumors\, while bei
ng strongly predisposed to developing others\, such as Alzheimer’s disease
and autoimmune disorders.\n\nThe Crnic Institute’s Human Trisome Project™
arises from the fundamental belief that all human beings are equally wort
hy of medical care and research\, regardless of their genetic make-up\, an
d that all individuals can make significant contributions to our society.
The Human Trisome Project will transform the population with trisomy 21 in
to one of the best studied groups of human beings in the world. The main g
oal of the Crnic HTP is to elucidate how trisomy 21 causes a different dis
ease spectrum\, protecting from some conditions while predisposing to othe
rs. This project will serve individuals with Down syndrome first and forem
ost\, but also greatly benefit all humankind.\n\n***Childcare is not provi
ded. With the exception of infants\, we request that you refrain from bri
 nging children to this event.
