\nThe Down Syndrome Education Series (DSES) is a monthly educational semin
ar for families of children with Down syndrome\, designed to connect paren
ts with information that will positively impact the education and well-bei
ng of their child.\n\nSession Topic - 'Meet Their Need and They Will Read'
\n\nNatalie Hale is an award-winning author\, an innovative educator\, par
ent of an adult son with Down syndrome\, and for over 20 years\, a nationa
l speaker on the topic of teaching reading to learners with Down syndrome
and other developmental delays.\n\nHer passion for reading and her awarene
ss of the difficulty of finding easy-to-read materials specifically design
ed for learners with Down syndrome led her to create Special Reads. In 199
1\, while teaching her 5-year-old son Jonathan (DS and ADHD) to read\, she
created all of his reading books and materials because there were no book
s available then that were visually clear enough (large type\, pictures se
parate from type\, generous white space\, etc.)\, and none that hooked his
interest. That lack led her to fill the gap by founding Special Reads. No
w parents\, educators\, and learners have access to the Reading Program sh
e would have loved to use then!\n\nNatalie currently lives in Los Angeles
and teaches reading to learners of all ages (she believes it's never too l
ate) through the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles. She continues t
o write books born of passion\, to develop new reading programs\, and to t
ravel across the country speaking to parents and educators.\n\nChildcare i
s not provided. With the exception of infants\, we request that you refra
in from bringing children to this event.
